Safety Boots Reviews

Steel toe, composite toe, rigger boots and work shoes — rated by the drivers who wear them on site every day.

HOW WE RATE

Review Categories

Every safety boot is rated across five key areas that matter most to professional drivers.

👚

Comfort

How they feel over a full shift. Cushioning, ankle support, break-in time, and whether your feet ache at the end of the day.

🛡

Safety Rating

Toe protection (steel vs composite), sole puncture resistance, slip rating, and compliance with EN ISO 20345 standards.

💪

Durability

How long they last under daily use. Sole wear, stitching quality, waterproofing longevity, and overall build quality.

🧶

Grip

Traction on wet concrete, oily surfaces, metal ramps, and taillifts. Critical for loading bay and yard work.

Value for Money

Price vs quality, cost per month of use, and whether they’re worth the investment compared to cheaper alternatives.

KNOW THE STANDARDS

Safety Boot Ratings Explained

Safety boots in Ireland must comply with EN ISO 20345. Here’s what the different ratings mean and which ones you need as a driver.

S1

Basic Safety

  • Toe protection (200J impact)
  • Closed heel / energy absorption
  • Antistatic properties
  • No midsole penetration resistance
  • Not waterproof

Best for: Indoor warehouse work, dry environments only. Not ideal for drivers who work outdoors.

S1P

Good Protection

  • Everything in S1
  • Midsole penetration resistance
  • Protection from nails/sharp objects
  • Not waterproof

Best for: General driving work, depots, loading bays. Good minimum standard for most drivers.

S3

Full Protection

  • Everything in S1P
  • Water-resistant upper
  • Cleated outsole for grip
  • All-weather protection

Best for: HGV drivers, outdoor loading, construction sites, wet conditions. The recommended standard for most professional drivers.

SRC

Slip Resistance

  • SRA — slip resistance on ceramic tile with detergent
  • SRB — slip resistance on steel floor with glycerine
  • SRC — both SRA and SRB combined

Best for: Any driver. SRC is the highest slip rating and critical for wet loading bays, taillifts, and metal ramps.

Pro Tip: Go for S3 SRC as your baseline. It covers you for every site and every condition. Composite toe is lighter than steel and won’t set off metal detectors at ports — worth the extra cost if you do cross-border or UK travel.

BEST FIT FOR YOUR JOB

Best Boots By Job Type

Different driving jobs put different demands on your footwear. Here’s what works best for each type of work.

🚚 Multi-Drop Delivery

You’re in and out of the cab 30+ times a day. You need lightweight boots that are easy to get on and off, with good cushioning for constant walking.

Our picks:

  • Scruffs Switchback 3 — trainer-style, lightweight, all-day comfort
  • Timberland Pro Splitrock XT — comfortable from day one, no break-in

Avoid: Heavy rigger boots — your knees will thank you after 100+ drops.

🚛 HGV Long-Haul

Fewer stops but longer time in the cab. You need boots comfortable enough to drive in for hours, but tough enough for loading bays and fuel stops.

Our picks:

  • Timberland Pro Splitrock XT — all-round excellence, light enough for driving
  • Apache Cranbrook — waterproof for those midnight fuel stops in the rain

Tip: Keep a pair of trainers in the cab for driving if your boots are heavy.

🏭 Warehouse / Yard Work

Heavy pallets, forklifts, and lots of walking on concrete. Maximum toe protection and grip are non-negotiable. Durability matters more than weight.

Our picks:

  • Cat Holton — steel toe, built like a tank, lasts years
  • Dr Martens Icon 2228 — indestructible once broken in

Tip: Get good insoles — concrete floors destroy your feet over time.

Tanker Drivers

Climbing on top of tankers, walking on wet metal surfaces, working around chemicals. Grip and safety ratings are everything. SRC slip rating is essential.

Our picks:

  • Helly Hansen Oxford Mid S3 — best grip on wet surfaces, puncture resistant
  • Scruffs Switchback 3 — excellent SRC rating, lightweight for climbing

Essential: Always check your employer’s specific PPE requirements — some tanker operators mandate particular boot specs.
