EXPERT ADVICE

Buying Guides

Not sure what to buy? Our guides help you make the right choice for your setup and budget.

What to Look for in a Dashcam

A dashcam is no longer optional for professional drivers. Here is what actually matters when choosing one.

1. Resolution and Night Vision

Minimum 1080p, ideally 4K. Night vision quality varies hugely between models. A dashcam that cannot capture a numberplate at night is not worth having. Look for Sony STARVIS sensors for the best low-light performance.

2. GPS Logging

GPS stamps your footage with location, speed, and time. Essential for insurance claims and incident evidence. Without GPS data, footage is significantly less useful in a dispute.

3. Parking Mode

Records when the engine is off. Critical for overnight layovers and service station stops. Look for motion-activated recording and hardwire kits for permanent power.

4. Heat Resistance

Truck cabs get extremely hot in summer. Cheap dashcams with built-in batteries can swell and fail. Look for capacitor-based models rated for high temperatures (up to 70°C).

5. Front and Rear Coverage

A rear camera protects against tailgaters and rear-end claims. Dual-channel systems like the Viofo A129 Pro Duo give you full coverage. Worth the extra cost for an artic driver.

How to Choose a Truck Satnav

A car satnav will send you under a low bridge or down a country lane. Here is how to pick a proper truck satnav.

1. Vehicle Profile Routing

Must accept your vehicle dimensions (height, width, length, weight) and route accordingly. This is the single most important feature. Garmin Dezl and TomTom GO Expert both do this well.

2. Screen Size

Bigger is better in a truck cab. 7 inches is the minimum. 10 inches is ideal. You need to read it at a glance without leaning forward. Anti-glare coatings help in direct sunlight.

3. Live Traffic and Map Updates

Lifetime map updates save money long-term. Live traffic via smartphone connection helps you avoid delays. Check whether traffic data requires a subscription or is included free.

4. Points of Interest for Truckers

Truck stops, weighbridges, rest areas, and fuel stations. A good truck satnav knows where you can park an artic overnight. Generic car POIs are useless for HGV drivers.

5. Mount Quality

Suction mounts fail in hot cabs. Magnetic mounts are more reliable long-term. Whichever you choose, test it on a bumpy road before committing. A satnav face-down on the floor mid-route is dangerous.
