Whether you’re an owner-driver buying your first truck or expanding a fleet, here’s what to check before you buy.
01
Check the CVRT History
Review the vehicle’s CVRT (Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test) history for recurring advisory items, especially on brakes, suspension, and emissions. A clean CVRT history suggests a well-maintained vehicle. You can check at rsa.ie.
02
Inspect Service Records
Ask for full service history. Trucks running 100,000+ km per year need regular maintenance. Main dealer stamps carry more weight, but a good independent can be just as thorough. Beware of gaps in the records.
03
Check the Operator’s Licence
If you’re buying to operate commercially, make sure the vehicle meets your road haulage operator licence requirements. The RSA can inspect your vehicle, so ensure it’s roadworthy and compliant from day one.
04
Understand the True Costs
The purchase price is just the start. Budget for insurance, motor tax, CVRT, fuel, tyres, and maintenance. Use our Fuel Cost Calculator to estimate running costs before you commit.
05
Get a Professional Inspection
Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection. A qualified technician can spot issues you might miss: chassis corrosion, turbo problems, injector wear, electrical faults, and more. It’s money well spent.
06
Know the Euro Emission Standard
Euro 6 is now the standard for many operations. Older Euro 5 trucks may face restrictions in certain areas and could attract higher motor tax rates. Check the emission class before you buy to avoid unexpected costs.
