Check Summary
Why Daily Checks Matter
Legal Requirement
Drivers and operators have a legal duty to ensure vehicles are roadworthy. Daily checks are a requirement, not optional.
Your Safety
Catching issues early protects you and other road users. A tyre blowout or brake failure at 50mph is not worth the risk.
Avoid Fines
DVSA roadside checks can result in prohibition notices and fines. Proper daily checks demonstrate due diligence.
Protect Your Licence
Serious defects can result in penalty points or Traffic Commissioner action. Daily checks create an audit trail.
Found a Defect?
What to Do
- Don’t drive — If the defect makes the vehicle unsafe, do not start the journey
- Report immediately — Inform your transport manager or operator
- Document it — Write a defect report with details of the issue
- Wait for repair — Only drive once the defect is fixed and signed off
Minor vs Serious Defects
Minor: Small issues that don’t affect safety (e.g., interior trim damage). Record and continue if safe.
Serious: Anything affecting brakes, steering, tyres, lights, or load security. Do NOT drive until fixed.
