BUYER’S GUIDE
Choosing the Right Van for Your Business
Not sure what size or type you need? Here’s a quick guide to help you pick the right van for the job.
Small Vans
Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy, Citroen Berlingo
- Payload: 500 – 800 kg
- Load length: 1.5 – 2.1 m
- Best for: Couriers, electricians, plumbers, local deliveries
- Licence: Standard car licence (Cat B)
Great fuel economy and easy parking. Ideal for urban work and light loads.
Medium Vans
Ford Transit Custom, VW Transporter, Mercedes Vito
- Payload: 800 – 1,200 kg
- Load length: 2.1 – 2.9 m
- Best for: Builders, delivery drivers, multi-drop, tradespeople
- Licence: Standard car licence (Cat B)
The UK’s most popular van size. Versatile enough for most trades and delivery work.
Large Vans
Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, VW Crafter, Renault Master
- Payload: 1,000 – 1,600 kg
- Load length: 2.9 – 4.3 m
- Best for: Removals, large deliveries, pallet work, conversions
- Licence: Cat B up to 3.5T GVW. Over 3.5T requires Cat C1.
Maximum cargo space. Check the GVW carefully — above 3.5 tonnes requires an additional licence.
Luton / Box Vans
Ford Transit Luton, Mercedes Sprinter Luton, Iveco Daily Luton
- Payload: 1,000 – 1,500 kg
- Load length: 3.5 – 4.5 m
- Best for: Removals, furniture delivery, bulky goods
- Licence: Cat B up to 3.5T. Cat C1 for 3.5T-7.5T.
Box body with tail lift is the removals industry standard. Overhead pod adds extra volume.
KNOW YOUR COSTS
Van Running Costs to Consider
Insurance
Commercial van insurance typically costs £800 – £2,500/year depending on the driver, area, van size, and intended use. Get quotes from specialist commercial insurers.
Road Tax (VED)
Light goods vehicles have a flat rate. Currently £335/year for most vans (2024/25). Electric vans pay a reduced rate. Check the latest rates at GOV.UK.
Fuel
A typical diesel van doing 30-35 MPG and covering 15,000 miles/year will cost around £2,500 – £3,500 in fuel. Use our Fuel Cost Calculator for your estimate.
MOT & Servicing
Budget £300 – £600/year for routine servicing (oil, filters, brakes). MOT is £58 (current fee). Commercial vans may need more frequent services if doing high mileage.
Clean Air Zones
Non-compliant vans face daily charges: £8 – £60/day in cities like London (ULEZ), Birmingham, Bristol, and Bath. Euro 6 diesel or electric avoids charges.
Tyres & Wear
Commercial van tyres cost £80 – £150 each and last 20,000 – 40,000 miles depending on load and driving style. Budget for a full set every 2-3 years.
GOING ELECTRIC
Electric Vans
Electric vans are becoming a practical choice for many businesses. Here’s what you need to know.
Advantages
- Zero road tax (currently)
- Exempt from ULEZ and Clean Air Zone charges
- Lower fuel costs (electricity vs diesel)
- Reduced maintenance (no oil changes, fewer brake changes)
- Government grants may still be available
- Quieter operation for early morning/late night deliveries
Considerations
- Higher purchase price vs diesel equivalent
- Range of 100 – 200 miles (depends on load and conditions)
- Charging infrastructure needed at your base
- Longer refuelling time (fast charge: 30-60 mins to 80%)
- Heavier battery reduces payload capacity
- Residual values still uncertain for older models
Electric vans work best for predictable, shorter routes where overnight charging is possible. For long-distance or high-mileage work, diesel may still be more practical.
